The roughly 7,200 residents of Belcaro and Cory-Merrill neighborhoods in south Denver enjoy an exceptional location with easy access to downtown. The 54-room Georgian-style, grand Phipps Mansion was built here in 1932 by Lawrence C. Phipps, treasurer of Carnegie Steel and a Colorado Senator. The mansion is currently owned by the University of Denver and is used as a conference center and museum. Belcaro, which means “beautiful dear one” in Italian, was named by Phipps. South of Belcaro is the neighborhood of Bonnie Brae, which features neighborhoods with curved, tree-lined streets and an intimately Scottish village feel.
Cory-Merrill is an idyllic and upscale neighborhood with large lots and wide streets. Belcaro and Cory-Merrill are adjacent to Washington Park, with a lake, basketball court, recreation center, athletic fields, tennis courts, playgrounds and plenty of open space. Cherry Creek Shopping Center and Bonnie Brae Village are just north of Belcaro and Cory-Merrill, offering excellent shopping and dining. Between Belcaro and Cory-Merrill is Old South Gaylord with over 60 shops, services, and restaurants.
